3 days of unrest in Addis…

These past three days have been quite eventful. Though I must say that today has been the worst till now.

On Monday – the day the official results of the elections was meant to come University students protested because the elections were run unfairly.

‘The opposition and ruling parties have alleged that gunmen intimidated voter, people were forced to vote for certain parties, ballot boxes were stuffed or disappeared, and the number of ballots in some constituencies exceeded the number of registered voters.’

Thus last Monday 370 students had been arrested in Addis and 150 elsewhere in the country.

Today the protesting went out of hand, notwithstanding the President’s Ban on demonstrations (how can someone ban demonstrations????, I don’t think its something somebody can control!)

It started off by a strike of taxi drivers and bus drivers…. And went on with demonstrations at the Merkato (apparently the biggest market place in East Africa)…..

“There had been an attempt by a group of people to break and look shops. Roadblocks had been set up and stones thrown by the people. In the ensuing conflict, some eight lives have been lost, which the government regrets very much,”

Though the final count according to my sources is now 20.

The people living in the house I’m living in were told not to go to work today, while I ventured bravely to work, hoping not to be shot or stonned on the way.

Nothing really happened in the area where I am living, or the office area… though loads of troubles happened around our Base Stations in Addis, some of the Employees told me that they heard shooting, not further than 50mtrs from where they were, and somewhere else they were burning busses, I got all these first hand accounts from all the employees I was trying to contact to make sure they are safe!!!!

I also spent a whole day trying to figure out an evacuation plan for the expats!! (who can imagine I would be doing this! I was terrified!!) as well as trying to figure out which embassy is going to take care of me!!! As obviously there are no Maltese Embassies in Ethiopia!!! Nevertheless I have a good contact with the Swedish Embassy, who is meant to take care of me!!!

I am usually calm in these circumstances and I don’t worry too much, such as in the Egyptian bombings (no bombing here thank God), though in this case I have no embassy to run to!

Till now I’m quite fine! And enjoyed going home early (I sent everyone home early just in case something comes up) – though I hope things settle…. Otherwise I’ll have to rush to the Merkato and buy myself a Kalashnikov (the lonely planet says they sell from Kalashnikovs to Camels to expensive incenses) to keep in my handbag!!!

He he something I found a big funny is the fact that the reporters say that at the Merkato they were not sure if the Police or the Security or the Army or the Public was shooting and throwing tear gas!!! - I hope they did not destroy a lot of the African souvenirs and craft I wanted to buy before I leave!!!

Anyways – I’m safe, and I’ve contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malta who is trying to figure out who will take care of me!! :D Besides I’ve almost perfected an evacuation plan!!! So I’ll be the first to put it in practice!!!!!

  • Thea...Dunno im just not feeling very good about this...I think we should maybe talk to Michelle and see whether the expats should leave Ethiopia for the time being...

  • Hey Thea-

Just a quick note to let you know we are all thinknig about you and wishing you the best in what has to be a "slightly" stressful time :P

You should keep checking http://travel.state.gov. This is the US gov't website where they post travel warnings. If they put up a travel warning there and tell US citizens to evacuate, I would recommend that you follow them and get out.

I also have a ton of contacts in the US Dept. of State so let me know if you want me to get in touch with anyone at the US embassy in case you need extra support.

    Big hugs from NYC-
    Suzanne

  • If you have the choice, hitch a ride with the US embassy folks. They have the best evacuation plan and they are staffed by hard Marines.

    Take care.

  • Hey Thea,

The final confirmation about my start-date should have been made this week, but they are being a bit cautious now and first want to see how things develop I guess. I still expect/hope to start somewhere between 4th & 18th of July. Anyway will keep you updated on that.

The name of the random Dutch striker who ended up in DK is "Sjoerd Slot" (do not even try to pronounce:-)).

Not sure if driving the white 4x4's are part of my jobdescription, but let's see how flexible they will be on that.

    Sjoerd

  • Dear Thea,
I am an Ethiopian student here in Amsterdam, trying to complete masters, trying to get to a point where I can return home and help this country of mine... I have been feeling desperate of late with the news of the demonstrations, deaths, and misused authority from home and I was lead by that feeling when trying to look for any news reporting incidents online when I stumbled into your site....

I was immediately caught by your remarks; gald to have found an unbaised voice... and although I was supposed to be working on my thesis I could not help but read on and on, feeling more and more warmth in my heart ... until I reached the point you stated the following:

"He he something I found a big funny is the fact that the reporters say that at the Merkato they were not sure if the Police or the Security or the Army or the Public was shooting and throwing tear gas!!! - I hope they did not destroy a lot of the African souvenirs and craft I wanted to buy before I leave!!!"

... I could not believe it... have you ever had the feeling where your heart sinks to the floor, you can actually feel it in your knees, feet... is it really a laughing matter? how could someone worry about artefacts when the lives of students are being wasted??? ethiopian students who hold the only position of true hope of Ethiopia's future... But I guess I read real truth between your lines... you sought your embassies, your refuge... and africa plumates... I believe at this point you may be thinking that I am blowing everything out of proportion... perhaps I am, but there is a fundamental element of truth in this, exageration or not... I do not stand to correct as I believe in individual freedom, but it deeply saddens me that you can speak so flipantly about what you witness... in your comments I came across no sense of reserve, little respect for the lives lost... yes, leave Ethiopia if things get worse... only she can stand for herself... it is everyone for him/herself.

    B.

  • I am sorry for hurting your feelings with that comment, it was not meant to hurt anyone, nevertheless, you have no right to judge me, and you don't know me well enough to know how i meant that comment.

Yes, of course I will leave Ethiopia if things get worse and war breaks out or people are constintaly fighting. I am sure you would do exactly the same, its easy for you to say these things once you've been out of your country.

I admire you for being one of those people who travel and come back to make their country another place, cause i beleive that is what Ethiopia needs...... but please don't judge other people without knowing who they are or what they are.
